Ideas for a Music-Themed Sleepover

A music-themed sleepover can be a lot of fun whether your guests are seven or 27 years old! The beauty about a musical theme is that you have so many activity options available to you. In fact, you might find yourself hard-pressed to fit all of your chosen activities into one night! If you’re having trouble thinking of a few music-based activities, consider trying a few of the traditional and well-loved activities below.

Music Trivia

Music trivia is good for an older group of girls, particularly teenagers. You can purchase a “top of the charts” music CD, such as Billboard or Now. These albums have the most current popular country. When you’re ready to play the game divide the girls into teams. If you don’t have enough people to do this then you can just let them play as individuals. Start by playing a few seconds of a random track, preferably somewhere in the middle of the song. Whoever raises their hand first gets to answer. If they answer correctly, they get a point. At the end of the game the person who has the most points wins! You can offer a small prize or goodie bag to the winner, or even offer them the CD for winning.

Karaoke

Karaoke is a fantastic way to break the ice and really get the fun started! If your guests are shy then you can divide them into teams and see how they fare that way or you can do good old-fashioned solo karaoke. For younger children you might consider using an album like Kidz Bop, which features popular songs remade by and for children. You can also pick up a cheap nursery rhyme CD for kids. Bear in mind that the album doesn’t necessarily have to be “karaoke”—the fun is in egging each other to sing along and let loose!

Music/Dance Movie Night

What better way to get into the groove of a music-themed slumber party then to veg-out and watch a movie marathon of flicks centered towards music and dance genres. Some great movie ideas for older teens include Footloose, Flashdance, Dirty Dancing, and Saturday Night Fever. If your audience doesn’t mind a trip back in time, rent Singin’ in the Rain, Swing Time, or a few Shirley Temple movies. These classics are chock-full of contagious dance routines and upbeat big band music that appeals to people of all age groups! For children you might consider getting in some musical Disney movies, such as Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Cinderella, Fantasia, or Snow White. Make a flick night of it and provide snacks reminiscent of a movie theater, such as popcorn, movie-sized boxes of candy (such as Raisinettes, Mike & Ike’s, Sno-Caps, etc. which can usually be found in the sweets isle of your local grocery store), nachos, and soft drinks. The kids are sure to get a kick out of this mock movie theater extravaganza!

Song Creation

What better activity is there for a music themed sleepover than to create a song? The idea is that each person will contribute to the song in a line-by-line fashion. Say you have five girls at your sleepover. Each girl should draw a number to decide the order in which they will contribute to the masterpiece. Girl number one might say, “I’ve got a fluffy kitty,” and girl number two will need to keep the song going with her own contribution, such as “her eyes are big and blue.” The rest of the girls will take their turn and then it goes back to girl number one. Each girl will continue to contribute to the song until everyone has had the same amount of turns. This game usually produces extremely funny results (for which we highly recommend that you break out the video camera, because you’ll definitely want to reminisce on these moments)! If your guests are younger, try putting their lyrics to a well known nursery rhyme so that everyone can sing the song once it is finished!
